Silverfish are common household pests and prefer cool, damp areas. Bookcases, closets and frames around windows and doors are where they willbe found. Generally, they will be spotted when moving an object under which they are hiding.
Adults are 1/3 to 1/2 inch long and are silver, wingless and covered with scales. Their antennae are nearly as long as their body.
Silverfish go after food and materials that are high in protein, sugar or starch. This includes cereals and moist wheat flour. They also like glue or paste on paper, sizing in paper and the bindings on books, as well as starched cloting and rayon fabric.
Silverfish do not lay many eggs at a time, but do lay them frequently. The eggs are approximately 1/32 inch long and are whitish and oval. Firebrats are similar to silverfish, but are mottled gray.
